Want Editing? Start Here!
Welcome to the Scared Zebra - Fiction Editing For Hire! Here's what you need to know if you're interested in getting your fiction edited.
The typical editor charges $30-80/1k words. I’m charging significantly less than that.
If you’re interested in my editing services, this is what you need to do.
Subscribe to my profile, James Pagett Tollen—not just this newsletter, but my profile. You can do that like this:
DM me briefly answering to the following:
What would you like me to edit—a novel excerpt? A short story?
Tell me the basics of the piece—what’s it about?
How many words is it?
What kind of feedback would you like (line-edits, overall, story-edits, so on)?
From there on, we can figure out a payment platform (Venmo, Zelle, etc.), a deadline, and your preferred way to receive feedback.
Here are my prices. You'll notice that the more words, the lower the price.
Words 1 to 20,000 cost: $20 per every 1k words
Words 20,001 to 40,000 cost: $18 per every 1k words
Words 40,001 to 60,000 cost: $16 per every 1k words
Words 60,001+ cost: $14 per every 1k words
I'm entirely comfortable with paying in installments. Whatever works for you.
EX: If you want me to edit a 30k-word novella, the first 20k will cost $400 and the final 10k will cost $180; in total, $580—half as much as a typical editor would charge. NOTE: if you have a close deadline to meet, the price may go up.
Then, after you’ve received your feedback, I will (so long as you’re willing), promote the hell out of your work.
I can either promote an already-published piece, or promote the piece I edited. Up to you.
That’s all! Sweet and simple.

Very cool! I’m just practicing fiction at this point but it sounds like it would be super helpful to those who may be trying to improve!
This is refreshingly clear. No mystique, no gatekeeping- just ‘here’s what I do and how it works.’ Loved it! 🤍
